ROOTS AND ROUTES

  2005 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The ROOTS & ROUTES website stays aloft thanks to the support and hard work of its interns. The objective for this summer’s program is to begin work on the new ROOTS & ROUTES.

Since starting in June, journalism interns Rachel Langus, Shoshana Walter and Sasha Greif have evaluated existing content, brought new concepts and themes to the table, and begun reorganization of the website. With the help of web design intern Purvi Sanghvi, the ROOTS & ROUTES redesign is underway. Rachel is researching the use of new technology and digital media in museum exhibitions. Shoshana is working on an article about the little known migration of African slaves and American Indians to Kansas in the 1860s.

Meet our Summer 2005 interns.

SHOSHANA WALTER

Shoshana Walter is entering her junior year at Mount Holyoke College. She majors in American Studies there, with an emphasis on minority and women's issues. She is aiming for a career in journalism, and will likely continue to incorporate social justice activism into her writing. She has already put these plans into action at Mount Holyoke, where she has created Feminist Uproar Magazine.

Shoshana brings a personal interest in heritage to ROOTS & ROUTES. She is inspired by every era of her family's own history, from her ancestors' immigration from Eastern Europe, to her father's family’s migration from Brooklyn to Long Island. She recently began reading about the development of rural areas in Western Massachusetts, where she attends college. Shoshana claims to be useless with directions, but her pursuits in history, activism, and literary journalism are leading her to some very interesting projects, indeed.

PURVI SANGHVI

Since obtaining her Bachelors of Engineering degree from Mumbai University in Mumbai, India in 2003, Purvi Sanghvi has been on a straight and determined career path. She will graduate from New York University this coming Spring with a Masters in Digital Imaging and Design, and one day she hopes to have her own 3D animation studio.

Originally from India, Purvi most appreciates the culture of her home and hopes one day to travel the world. “Each place has its own importance and existence,” she says. In the meantime, Purvi lives and works in New York City, though unabashedly admits (don’t tell any Yankees fans!) to liking Boston better.

Despite her taste in cities, Purvi cannot be derailed. She is on the track to success, and ROOTS & ROUTES is certainly one of the better stops along the way.

RACHEL LANGUS

Rachel Langus has a cinematic view of things. “I like the idea of traveling back in time, in history, but also literally traveling,” says Rachel, of ROOTS & ROUTES. A senior at Boston University, Rachel is majoring in English and Film Studies and sees herself working in film, whether it be writing, teaching, or production.

Rachel is not new to the field. She has written for MovieMaker Magazine and Cineaste Magazine, and has interned at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, NY and the Brattle Film Foundation in Cambridge, MA.

Rachel has maintained a steady interest in French language and culture since her home stay in Besançon, France during high school. She is also interested in exploring her Jewish roots and traveling to Amsterdam, where she hopes to visit Ann Frank’s house. Rachel’s interests in film, family history and travel are all coming together in her work on ROOTS & ROUTES.
