THE COUNCIL ON THE ENVIRONMENT OF NYC promotes
environmental awareness among New Yorkers and solutions to environmental problems
through four programs and other projects.
THE OPEN SPACE GREENING PROGRAM provides material and technical assistance to community-sponsored open space projects. We are assisting groups with new and existing sites through our Plant-A-Lot Project. Grow Truck, a tool lending and technical assistance service, operates in all five boroughs. Bulb and plant sales are held annually for groups involved in community projects.
GREENMARKET ensures a continuing supply of fresh local produce for New Yorkers and promotes regional agriculture. By giving small family farmers profitable outlets for their produce, Greenmarket encourages them to continue farming. Thirty-two weekly markets were in 27 locations in the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island in 1998. Eighteen are open year round.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION includes the Training Student Organizers (TSO) Program. Students organize environmental improvement projects in neighborhoods, schools and the home. TSO Staff teach students on a weekly basis. Projects include beach and park cleanups, monitoring of fire hydrants, energy conservation, public education on recycling, water conservation and noise abatement. We are assisting the High School for Environmental Studies, established in 1992.
WASTE PREVENTION AND RECYCLING SERVICE promotes
waste prevention in organizations through 1) the adoption of practices that
eliminate waste (including recycling) and 2) the purchase of recycled and recyclable,
reusable, durable and non-toxic products. Activities include research, the design
and installation of pilot programs, as well as publication of office waste prevention
strategies for local and national use.
