BOARDMAN FAMILY

New Milford 23 August 1808

Elijah Boardman to Eli Baldwin at Boardman

Mr. Jo. Platt is erecting a fulling mill.... I expect you will caution him to take great pains in securing perfectly strong the dam...almost all the mill dams in the state of Ohio have been carried off once or twice before the owners would make them sufficient strong and secure. I do not wish the dams high but made very strong at bottoms for sometimes the freshets are very great and heavy.... On the subject of the carding machine I wish you to write me more particular after you have got sufficient information what quantity of wool would annually be brought for carding—and what materials could be furnished in Ohio & what would be necessary to send out from here and whether a machine could be builded out their or whether the iron & brass castings and cards & an artist would all have to be sent from here....
